I have been engaged in a deep relationship with wood for over 35 years. I know in my bones this connection will endure. Each day of engaging in the creation process brings new insights about the wood, about the tools and techniques ~ about myself.
At times I work with what might be considered common local woods like juniper or pine. At other times a project may involve a sustainably harvested exotic like jatoba or mahogany. Each wood has its own unique story, promises and challenges. One must listen closely when harmonizing a design with the lively nature and requirements of a particular species. At its finest, this interaction is an adventure well worth engaging in. An unexpected turn of events will most likely make a piece not only different but better than what I had first imagined. Such is the nature of delight!
Regardless of the specifics that visually define an individual piece of woodwork, it is careful craftsmanship and attention to detail that allow an inspired idea to become not only a useful object but a beautiful presence.
Much of the legacy of my days on this Earth will be the individual creations I have helped bring to life. Each chair or table or wall cabinet will out-live me. My hope is that from one generation to the next, each one will be a part of someone's day to day journey. It will be something that they choose to abide with because of its shape ~ color ~ patina ~ character. As simple as it may sound, such a notion is very satisfying to consider.
